Shop Floor

Shop-Floor Control

Shop-floor control for small manufacturers: work orders and travelers, routings, labor and production reporting, barcode workflows, and getting data operators will actually enter.

Shop-floor control is how the plan becomes visible work and how completed work becomes usable data.

The minimum viable transaction set

Every additional transaction you ask operators to perform must earn its place. In most small plants the essential set is small: material issue, operation completion, quantity good and scrap, and job close.

Ask what decision each data point supports. If nobody uses it, stop collecting it.

Travelers and routings

Routings define the operations, sequence, work centers and standards. Travelers put that on paper or a screen at the job. Keeping them in sync with reality — including the informal steps the floor added years ago — is what makes scheduling credible.

Barcode and mobile capture

Scanning reduces error and delay, but it amplifies whatever process it automates. Fix the transaction design first; then automate the capture.
