The MRP versus ERP question is really a scope question: how much of the business do you want one system to run?
The functional difference
MRP plans materials. MRP II adds capacity, routings and manufacturing cost. ERP integrates manufacturing with finance, sales, purchasing, HR and often CRM in a single database.
Modern products blur these labels. What matters is the functional footprint you will implement and maintain, not the acronym on the website.
When focused MRP is the right answer
- Accounting works acceptably today and is not the problem.
- The pain is shortages, schedules, BOMs or inventory.
- There is no internal team to run a multi-department program.
- You need results in months, not years.
When ERP is justified
- Multiple entities, currencies or complex financial consolidation.
- Costing and finance genuinely depend on real-time manufacturing data.
- Several disconnected systems already require heavy manual reconciliation.
- There is capacity to staff and govern the program properly.
